Study MBBS from Texila American University, Guyana

About the University

Texila American University (TAU), Guyana, is a well-established private medical university that has been delivering quality education since its inception on September 27, 2010. The institution was officially registered with the National Accreditation Council of Guyana (NACG) on November 18, 2010, and has maintained its registration consistently. The first cohort of students began their academic journey at the Critchlow Campus, Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, on May 1, 2011.

With steady growth in its student population, TAU expanded its facilities in 2014 with an annex campus in Goedverwagting, East Coast. Further expansion led to the establishment of a modern, purpose-built 120,000 sq. ft. campus at Plantation Providence, East Bank Demerara, in 2017. This campus includes advanced academic spaces, lecture halls, laboratories, and a well-equipped library. It can accommodate over 1,000 students and was recognized with the Green Initiative Award in 2020 by the Guyana Chamber of Commerce and Industries for its eco-friendly infrastructure.

The cornerstone academic offering of TAU is its Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, equivalent to the MBBS degree by international standards. This four-year program consists of two years of Basic Sciences followed by two years of Clinical Sciences. Clinical training initially took place at Georgetown Public Hospital in Guyana and was later extended to Tucson Medical Centre in Arizona, USA. The curriculum has been upgraded to include NBME Subject and Comprehensive Examinations as mandatory evaluations since 2020. Additionally, the university partnered with Kaplan in 2021 to integrate their USMLE review programs during the Transition Semester.

The first MD graduates completed their studies in 2014, and since then, TAU has graduated hundreds of students from over 40 countries, including India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Jamaica, and the United States. TAU graduates are eligible to appear for global licensure exams such as USMLE (USA) and NEXT (India), thanks to the university’s recognition by major regulatory bodies including the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India, the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 2019, TAU diversified its academic offerings by launching programs in Public Health and Business Administration at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Furthermore, the university hosts international academic conferences; its most recent conference in April 2021 focused on “Mental Health and Road Traffic Accidents” and attracted wide participation from the medical community.

TAU is also committed to social responsibility and community engagement. It has conducted several initiatives such as medical outreach programs, assistance to old-age homes, donation of medical supplies, COVID-19 relief efforts, and free classes for CXC students. These programs illustrate the university’s dedication to the holistic development of students and its contribution to society.

Texila American University offers a globally aligned curriculum taught in English, making it an ideal destination for international students, especially from India. The university offers robust support systems, affordable fees, and accessible admission procedures, including visa sponsorship and an efficient admissions process.

Why Choose This University

Texila American University (TAU), Guyana, offers an excellent academic environment for students aspiring to pursue a medical degree that meets international standards. The MD program at TAU is equivalent to an MBBS degree and is tailored to prepare students for global medical licensing exams like the USMLE (USA), NEXT (India), and PLAB (UK). The program’s curriculum is USMLE-aligned, and students benefit from Kaplan’s review programs integrated into the academic structure.

One of the most notable features of TAU is its global recognition. The university is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and is recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India. This makes graduates eligible for medical licensure in several countries, including the USA, UK, India, and across the Caribbean and Africa.

Affordability is a key advantage at TAU. With a total program cost of approximately USD 105,000 over five years—including tuition and accommodation—it provides an economical option without compromising quality. Unlike some other medical institutions, there is no donation or capitation fee, making it accessible to more students.

The medium of instruction is English, which eliminates any language barriers for Indian and other international students. Additionally, TAU has a substantial Indian student population and ensures the availability of Indian food both on and near campus, contributing to a comfortable living experience.

The university campus is modern and purpose-built, providing students with advanced learning facilities, including smart classrooms, laboratories, and a well-stocked library. Clinical rotations are offered both in Guyana and the United States, giving students exposure to diverse healthcare systems.

Moreover, TAU is known for its community engagement through medical camps, free training programs, and social initiatives. Students are encouraged to participate in these activities, fostering social responsibility and enhancing real-world skills.

TAU's streamlined admission process and visa support services add further convenience. The university offers a one-year renewable visa sponsorship, and the entire admission process—from application to visa issuance—can be completed within a few weeks.

All these factors—global recognition, affordability, excellent infrastructure, strong academic support, and a student-friendly environment—make Texila American University a compelling choice for students aspiring to study medicine abroad.
